We’ve all heard the social media gurus saying ‘everything is content’, but you might be wondering exactly how to capture and keep all those moments without maxing out your phone storage - and what should you even be capturing in the first place?
The goal is to build a treasure trove of content to keep your socials vibrant and engaging, ensuring you’ll never run out or be stuck for something to post. When it comes to getting content for social media, content banking will be your best friend and I’m going to show you how to do it with all my top tips for what to take snaps and shots of.
How to 'bank' content for social media ⬇️
I recommend content banking rather than relying on one-off shoots or special occasions because it makes your life so much easier. Instead of swimming through seven seas of irrelevant screenshots and pictures of your dog (although maybe you shouldn’t discount those), collecting genuine snapshots of your life and using them on your stories and posts is key to the question of how to get content for social media.
It helps people relate to and connect with you while keeping them in the loop about what you do and how you do it. Remember, people buy from people! Here are some ideas of the sort of things you should be banking for future content:
📸 Behind-the-scenes peeks
Give your audience a glimpse into what you’re working on, helping them imagine themselves in that client position!
👩🏼💻 Projects you’re diving into or have just wrapped up
Let people know what you’ve been doing or are about to get started with, to help them get excited about the prospect of working with you. Are you working on an itinerary for an exciting new destination, or have just booked a new dream client? Show your audience.
☕️ Your favourite coffee and co-working spots
If you’re a bit of a nomad and love to sit somewhere with a sea view and work (like me), take your social media audience along with you. If they’re local they might even recognise the spot, opening up new opportunities for connection.
📔 What’s on your reading list?
It may sound simple, but adding lifestyle elements like this to your social media helps keep you human for your audience, and shows they can resonate with you in other areas than just business. These kinds of connections help warm up leads and nurture relationships.
💡 What are you inspired by?
This can be in work, life or both! Being able to see themselves represented in your brand helps your potential customers connect, and builds trust because they know you’re on the same wavelength
⚡️ Mantras or quotes that spark joy
What touches your soul? Your audience wants to see where you are aligned, and uplifting posts like this can really solidify a connection.
🏖️ A glimpse into your personal life
You should only ever share as much as feels right for you, but letting people see a little of your personal life can also help them realise they are talking to a person, not just a brand. You don’t have to tell them what you’re having for breakfast every day or about the latest neighbourhood gossip (unless you want to), but a little splash of something personal goes a long way - maybe it’s time for those dog photos, after all!
💌 Networking events, business happenings etc
If you’re doing something related to your business away from your desk, it’s a great idea to let your audience know about it. It keeps your content fresh and varied, while still being turtley relevant. People love seeing people out and about, making waves in the world.
My top tips for banking content for social media ⬇️
If you’re thinking this all sounds great, but in practice, it's not so easy, don’t worry, I have my very own tried and tested tips to get you started! These are all things I do myself to make content creation as easy and fun as possible.
✨ Capture everything, even the moments that seem irrelevant to your usual posts. For example, I keep a digital photo album of all my island adventures so there’s always content ready to go, which I’m always grateful for when the weather isn’t cooperating for a beach shoot
✨ Whether you’re an iPhone or Android lover, you can use the ‘live’ photo setting - this creates short videos along with your photos, which are perfect for sharing on socials! Let it work its magic, and you’ll get 1.5 seconds of video goodness before and after the photo moment. Hello, easy reel creation!
✨ I also love to grab stills from my video captures! Screenshots taken from HD video often have much better quality than you’d expect, so go ahead and set it to ‘record’ and see what you can do. Sometimes taking a video feels much more relaxed and natural than trying to get the perfect shot.
If you need a little more inspiration to keep your content afloat, why not check out my Aloha Social Content Cards? They’re specially curated by me to help you stay inspired and excited, with 34 content prompts to act as a paddle when you feel a little ‘up the creek’! Grab them here.
So, the question of how to get content for social media often feels big and overwhelming, but it's best to keep it simple and remember - your audience is not judging you. They just want to find out if you’re the best fit for them, so the more evidence you can give them, the better! To find out how I can continue to support you on your social media journey, get in touch - I always love to say aloha! 🌺
